As part of the 'Six Days of Electrical Engineers of the Engineering Chamber of Montenegro', a panel on the topic 'Renewable Energy Sources – Present and Future' was held, in which he participated. Ivan Asanović, Executive Director of the Montenegrin Transmission System Operator. He informed those present about the impact of large-scale renewable energy generators on the transmission system. The installed capacity of thermal power plants in the region is around 40 GW. To replace them with renewable generation, the capacity of new generation facilities would need to be five to six times greater, which means the transmission network would also need to be adapted to accommodate this capacity.

Over the last ten years, the Montenegrin electricity transmission system has practically doubled its capacity. One of the most significant projects is the connection to the Italian electricity transmission system.

No less significant are the projects of modernising management and protection in the plants and the project of introducing a SCADA system, which enables modern and efficient management.

In order to enable the connection of larger renewable energy producers, the plans are twofold: strengthening the electricity transmission infrastructure and developing system management, given that CGES is responsible for system stability at a national level, concluded Asanović.
