Investing in Grid Modernisation for a Renewable Future

Crnogorski elektroprenosni sistem took part in the International Conference Energy Week Western Balkans 2025, held on October 8–9 in Montenegro. This prestigious event brought together over 250 leaders from the energy sector, governments, financial institutions, and international investors to discuss the accelerated energy transition of the Western Balkans.

The conference included a panel discussion on “Investing in Grid Modernization for a Renewable Future”, which was attended by Aleksandar Mijušković, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CGES. When asked about the major operational challenge for the Montenegrin power system as the demands for connecting renewable sources continue to grow, Mijušković answered:

"The Montenegrin power system has been facing operational challenges of integrating renewable energy sources (RES) for some time now. A significant part of RES has been connected in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, and we are also receiving information about the connection of new power plants in the Western Balkan countries. Under such conditions, the system is highly exposed to market influence, i.e. significant power flow fluctuations, both in direction and intensity, almost on an hourly basis. To improve the situation, activities are being carried out in two directions:

Strengthening the grid is essential, as new power plants with capacities several times larger than the existing ones will be connected, as well as the implementation of European Union legislation in Montenegro and other Western Balkan countries.”

Answering other questions, Mijušković, among other things, emphasized that regional cooperation is of vital importance both for ensuring the conditions for the green transition and for the reliable operation of the system in current circumstances. He stressed that the construction of the interconnection with Italy has brought significant benefits to CGES and to Montenegro as a whole, such as direct integration into the single European market, major investments in infrastructure and modernization of the entire grid, significant improvement of security of supply for consumers in Montenegro, modernization and organizational strengthening of CGES through cooperation with Terna and generation of substantial revenues through congestion management and the ITC mechanism.

CGES continues to have a leading role in the modernization of Montenegro's electricity system and ensure reliable supply in an era of growing demand for renewable energy sources.
