About us

Our story

Crnogorski Elektroprenosni Sistem AD (CGES) is a company headquartered in Podgorica that operates in Montenegro in the public interest sector – the transmission of electric energy. CGES's operations are specifically regulated by the Energy Law and a series of secondary acts, which further regulate the work of the transmission system operator, such as the methodologies established by the Energy Regulatory Agency (REGAGEN), and the rules for the operation of the electricity transmission system, which are adopted by the operator and approved by the Agency. The company is majority state-owned, while the strategic partner is the Italian transmission system operator – Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale S.p.A, which is CGES's second-largest shareholder.

The quality of our core operations is guaranteed by decades of experience in the development, operation, maintenance, and management of the electric transmission system, gained through a series of organizational structures within Montenegro's electric power sector since 1957, when the first facility of Montenegro's transmission network was commissioned.

Since 1961, the company has operated under the name “Elektrocrnagora - Titograd”. Later, in 1973, three basic joint labor organizations were established within “Elektrocrnagora - Titograd”:

OOUR Elektroprenos – Titograd from the existing Elektroprenos division
OOUR Elektrogradnja – Titograd from the Construction division
OOUR Shared Services from the specialized departments of Elektrocrnagora

The company has often transformed, while continuously fulfilling its primary task – ensuring the safe operation and development of Montenegro's electricity transmission system. Thus, in March 2009, in line with the requirements imposed by the liberalization of the electricity market, as well as EU regulations regarding the separation of market and monopolistic activities, and taking into account the need to improve economic efficiency, The EPCG Shareholders' Assembly made a decision to form a new joint-stock company, “Transmission”.
By decision of the General Assembly of Shareholders, the company changed its name to Montenegrin Electric Transmission System AD.
For the next five-year period, CGES expects a very extensive investment plan that will present major challenges for the company. The implementation of the planned investments in all regions of Montenegro, the connection to Italy, which is one of the largest projects in the company's history, as well as the connection to Serbia, will not only allow for the completion of Montenegro's electricity transmission system in a way that will improve the reliability of its operation, create the conditions for the development of future generation in Montenegro and eliminate potential bottlenecks in the development of the coastal region, but will also enable Montenegro to become an important electricity hub in the region, strongly connected to the future regional electricity market.

AD Transmission has ensured the fulfillment of its primary task: the transmission of electric energy in a volume that enables the reliable supply of all its customers. Since the commissioning of the Nikšić substation, Montenegro's transmission system has grown into a modern system that is strongly interconnected with the systems of neighboring countries. Today, its operation, maintenance, and development are overseen by 341 employees.

The mission of CGES is the safe and reliable operation of the electric power system in Montenegro, quality transmission, delivery of electricity, and system management in accordance with international standards.
By leveraging our potential with a focus on the development of the transmission system, our vision is to be a company recognized for the highest quality services, ready to face challenges and to be a driver of change aimed at sustainable development and innovation. Step by step, we have, in fact, set the standard for modern energy, developing technologies and business models. For this very reason, our commitment to innovation in the development of the electric transmission system is not just rhetoric, but a reality unfolding before our very eyes.

Pioneering projects make our company a cornerstone of the modern energy landscape.

By the decision of the Assembly of Shareholders of Elektroprivreda Crna Gora AD Nikšić on restructuring through separation and the establishment of a new joint-stock company no. 10-00-3204 of March 27, 2009, the Prenos Podgorica Joint-Stock Company was established.
For all the transformations mentioned, there were strong economic and social reasons at the time of their implementation.
