MINA-BUSINESS – Crnogorski elektroprenosni sistem (CGES) is installing two new transformers at the Podgorica 1 and Mojkovac substations as part of a EUR 4.5 million investment aimed at strengthening system reliability, modernizing the transmission network, and improving the security of electricity supply.
According to Olivera Čolaković, Chief Test Engineer at CGES, the EUR 4.5 million investment was allocated to the procurement of two new 150 MVA power autotransformers, which will replace ageing transformer units at the Podgorica 1 and Mojkovac substations
“Following nearly three years of continuous work—from preparing technical specifications and overseeing the public procurement process to monitoring manufacturing, quality assurance, factory acceptance testing, and highly demanding transportation process—the transformers have finally arrived at their installation sites, and assembly works are currently underway,” said Čolaković.
While presenting the investment, Čolaković took the opportunity to extend her congratulations to all female colleagues on International Women in Engineering Day, emphasizing that the contribution of women to the engineering profession is invaluable and represents an integral part of every company's success.
“CGES is particularly proud that 45 women engineers are part of our team. Through their expertise, professionalism, and dedication, they contribute daily to the implementation of major projects and the continuous improvement of our transmission system. That is why I am especially pleased that today, on our day, we are presenting a major investment—the acquisition of two new transformers—which marks another significant step towards a more reliable, stable, and modern electricity system in Montenegro,” Čolaković told Mina-Business.
She said that the transformer at the Podgorica 1 substation will be installed first. The works are expected to continue until mid-July, with commissioning anticipated in mid-July.
‘’Installation of the second transformer at the Mojkovac substation will follow. These works may take somewhat longer due to the fact that the substation is more challenging in terms of site conditions and spatial constraints. In addition, the installation itself is a complex procedure involving the use of heavy machinery and equipment in a high-voltage environment, which requires strict safety precautions’’, Čolaković explained.
She expressed confidence that the contractors, together with all CGES teams involved, will successfully meet all challenges and bring this phase of the works to a successful completion.
“I believe that the transformer in Mojkovac will also be commissioned by the end of August, or possibly in early September,” Čolaković said.
In this way, she noted, CGES reaffirms its continued commitment to system reinforcement and grid modernization.
The procurement of these two transformers will contribute to improved electricity supply to consumers, particularly in terms of energy exchange between the 220 kV and 110 kV networks. The project is of particular importance as it will enhance system stability and create opportunities for further development of the transmission network, delivering long-term benefits to system users and, ultimately, to the satisfaction of the citizens of Montenegro,” Čolaković concluded.
