CGES and EMS Sign Electricity Transmission Infrastructure Purchase Agreement

Crnogorski elektroprenosni sistem (CGES) and Elektromreža Srbije (EMS) have signed an agreement for the purchase of electricity transmission infrastructure, reaffirming their long-standing cooperation and joint commitment to developing a stable and reliable regional power transmission system. The agreement was signed by the directors of the two companies, Ivan Asanović and Jelena Matejić.

The subject of the agreement is the purchase of parts of the 220 kV and 110 kV interconnection transmission lines, which are owned by EMS but located on the territory of Montenegro. Under the agreed terms, ownership of these lines will be transferred to CGES.

The need for this arrangement arises from the complexities involved in operating and maintaining transmission lines located in another country, which presents both technical and legal challenges. Therefore, CGES and EMS jointly initiated a sustainable solution for the 220 kV Pljevlja–Bajina Bašta, 220 kV Pljevlja–Bistrica and 110 kV Pljevlja 1–Potpeć interconnection lines, which are owned by EMS but partially located in Montenegro, as well as the internal 220 kV Mojkovac–Pljevlja line, which is partially located in Serbia but operated by CGES.

Accordingly, the agreed model ensures that each transmission system operator will assume ownership of the transmission lines located within its respective territory. This approach will simplify management, improve maintenance efficiency, and provide greater legal and operational clarity for the functioning of transmission systems.

Ivan Asanović, Executive Director of CGES, emphasized: “This agreement demonstrates that CGES and EMS are fully capable of resolving complex cross-border issues in a way that benefits both countries and all users of the regional power system.”

Jelena Matejić, Director of EMS, stated: “Through this agreement, we are establishing a more robust technical and legal foundation for the transmission system, thereby enhancing the reliability and security of the regional electricity network.”

The signing of the agreement was attended by Leda Minić, Director of Electricity Transmission Sector, Rade Marković, Head of the Legal Department, and EMS representative, Tamara Crvenica.
